I was on my way out the door this morning, to attend an advanced Master Naturalist training, when I got a text. That text sent me in another direction. I think learning how to trap and band raptors qualifies as advanced training in its own way. I can’t really describe how I feel, but I just ate a giant plate of nachos and drank a coke, so basically there’s a party happening inside my mind. This is Eva, my friend Rachel’s Harris’s Hawk. Eva and I had met before, but this was my first time handling her — she was not amused. (I instantly regretted wearing red lipstick when she puffed up.) Eventually she calmed down (me too) and I was able to tell the crowd about my favorite buteo (parabuteo). Harris’s Hawks are one of the few avian species that hunt in packs. They hunt rodents and other birds but, because they hunt cooperatively, they can take on large prey, like Jack Rabbits. How? They tire out the quarry so that it slows down enough to be caught. I love all animals. But we have a serious issue in this country with cat hoarding al fresco and it needs to be addressed. Feral cats are not a natural part of the landscape and it’s our fault. #birds #conservation #linkinprofile
